Anthem Falls In Season Finale to Houston, 14-26

HOUSTON, TX (June 8, 2025) – The Houston SaberCats scored 12 points in the final 10 minutes to win against Anthem RC on Saturday night at SaberCats Stadium.

Connor Robinson and Corbin Smith scored tries for Anthem in the season finale.

Houston got on the board first. Drake Davis scored a highlight-reel try in the 12th minute to put Houston up by 7.

Anthem played a strong first half, having multiple opportunities close to Houston’s try zone. However, the visitors could not find a score.

It remained just a seven-point game heading to the second half.

Anthem did get on the board just four minutes into the second half. Connor Robinson dotted it down and Mitch Wilson knocked the conversion through to knot up the score.

Houston had a quick response, scoring in the 49th minute. Louritz Van Der Schyff put the SaberCats back in the lead and the good conversion reclaimed their seven-point lead.

In the 70th minute, Anthem tied it thanks to a couple of MLR rookies. EJ Freeman blew up a play with a massive hit, forcing a turnover. Corbin Smith retrieved the loose ball and took it in for the try.

One minute later and once again, the SaberCats retook the lead. Jay Renton scored the try, but the conversion was missed, keeping the advantage at five.

Anthem pushed for late fireworks, but a 79th minute try from Emmanuel Albert put the match out of reach.

In the end, the Sabercats held on a 26-14 victory and the right to host in the MLR playoffs.
