Anthem RC Falls to Old Glory FC, 19-41
CHARLOTTE, NC (May 18, 2025) – Seven tries for Old Glory DC was too much for Anthem RC to recover from Sunday night as the hosts fell to the visitors 19-41.
Dylan Fortune, Jake Turnbull, and EJ Freeman scored the tries for Anthem RC.
The match did not start as Anthem had hoped as Old Glory DC scored the first try of the match nine minutes in to take a five-point lead.
However, Anthem had a strong response. Anthem moved it down the field well and a final push between the posts granted Dylan Fortune his second try of the season to give Anthem a 7-5 lead.
Old Glory DC took control of the first half from that point forward. Three consecutive tries to end the first half gave Old Glory DC a halftime lead of 24-7.
Anthem started the second half very well. An excellent kick bounced all the way to the Old Glory DC try zone and Anthem secured a tackle within it, marking a scrum just outside the try zone. After numerous attempts to get the ball in, vice captain Jake Turnbull scored. Cliven Loubser knocked the conversion through, cutting the deficit to 10.
Again though, Old Glory DC responded well to an Anthem score. A good penalty kick deep into Anthem territory set the visitors up and Perry Humphreys touched down for his team-leading sixth try of the campaign.
Old Glory DC tacked on two more scores to put the game seemingly out of reach by the 74th minute, extending their lead back out to 27.
A bright moment occurred just before the match ended for the home side. Rookie EJ Freeman tapped it down for his first Major League try, making the final score 19-41.
QUOTES:
Ishma-eel Safodien on the team’s performance tonight:
“DC obviously came ready to play and I think we struggled in the areas around set pieces. We struggled in the scrum, struggled in set piece and it’s tough to go forward like that. But we’re excited to go into these last two games.
There’s nothing to lose, so we’re just excited to really empty the tank.”
EJ Freeman on what it means to score his first Major League try:
“It means that all the hard work basically paid off and it was hard. It was hard getting to this point, and it just shows that I’m going in the right direction.”
