Anthem RC return to Charlotte for their home opener riding a wave of confidence after a stunning 39-26 bonus-point victory over the California Legion — the club’s first-ever MLR win. Six tries, including tries from Man-of-the-Match Conner Mooneyham, a Campbell Robb driving maul score, and a Baden Godfrey pushover try that showcased real pack dominance. With a solid defense, and a dynamic attack, it was a performance that announced this team to the league, and those players will attempt to back it up on home soil.

But if that win in Irvine was a milestone, Saturday’s match represents a significant step up. The Legion, for all their individual talent, were a newly merged franchise finding their feet with a short preseason behind them. The Chicago Hounds are a different proposition entirely.

Chicago finished their 2025 campaign with an 11-5 record, reached the Eastern Conference Finals, and return in 2026 with their entire coaching staff intact and a rock-solid core of returning players. All-MLR center and 2025 Back of the Year Ollie Devoto leads a backline that ranked second in the league for ball carries last season, while co-captains Lucas Rumball and Chris Hilsenbeck set the tone in the pack and at flyhalf respectively. This is a team built on continuity and know-how.

Anthem fans will note a familiar face in the Chicago ranks, former captain Jake Turnbull, who moved north in the offseason. In return, lock James Scott, will be looking to remind his former club exactly what they’re missing.
