
Second Half Comeback Falls Short for Anthem RC
Two tries within two minutes brought match to one-score game
SAN DIEGO, Calif. (June 9, 2024) – Anthem Rugby Carolina challenged San Diego Legion late in the second half but fell short, 34-24, on Sunday afternoon at Snapdragon Stadium. Anthem RC returns to American Legion Memorial Stadium against the Miami Sharks on Sunday, June 16 at 3:00 p.m. Tickets can be purchased at anthemrc.com/tickets.
HOW IT HAPPENED:
Cliven Loubser scored the first points of the afternoon for Anthem RC, dotting the ball down for a try and kicking the conversion. Loubser totaled 14 points with one try, three conversion kicks, and one penalty goal.
Te Rangatira Waitokia weaved through multiple defenders and avoided enough tackles to pass the ball to Tomasi Alosio for a try in the 74th minute. Anthem RC caught San Diego off guard and scored another try in the 75th minute after Waitokia and Alosio connected again for Waitokia’s seventh try of the season.
The pair of tries in the final ten minutes brought the score to just a seven point deficit before Legion scored a penalty goal to lead 34-24. Anthem RC continued pushing on offense in search of another scoring opportunity, but San Diego held on for the win.
